Irene Waters’ work pays homage to the illustrators that have beautifully illustrated Lewis Carroll’s ‘Alice in Wonderland and ‘Alice Through the Looking Glass.’
“I have collated a selection of vintage jewelry and ‘voetenstoofje’ or Oma boxes, these boxes seemed to me to have been forgotten and defiantly unloved, when I found them on flea markets and second-hand shops. I decided to bring them back to life and celebrate this fictional story which was written in 1865.”
The original story was entitled ‘Alice’s Adventures Underground’ by the Reverend Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, he was the pseudonym Lewis Carroll (1832-1898) This delightful book has been illustrated by some incredible illustrators such-as Sir John Tenniel, Mabel Lucie Attwell, Ralph Steadman to name just a few.

“Each box has been covered using vintage Alice’s books and illustrations, the illustrative imagery is theirs and I have acknowledged that on every piece I have altered, reconstructed and embellished, creating contemporary boxes. During my journey I have started to paint using similar methods, but as I worked, I noted that I was beginning to also incorporate, original ink drawings, paintings, and mixed media.”
This body of work has been on-going for about two years now, and always representing this classical piece of literature. I can say “this journey has been a wonderful discovery…a discovery of Alice and myself!”
